According to a recent study, funded by the charity Street Games and reported by the BBC, young people are being squeezed out of sport because a third live in poverty and the cost of taking part is too high.

The report makes a number of recommendations including:

  • more free and cheap sport provision, with concessionary rates for over-19s
  • school facilities be made available to wider groups
  • more informal but organised activities
  • better supervision of parks and play areas

Alan Pearson, MD at SAQ InternationalOur very own Managing Director, Alan Pearson, says "Access to all sports and physical activity facilities is important for young people. The problem is the expense to open these School facilities and also the issue of risk to the rest of the School when the facilities are integrated.

We need to get back to using our imagination and start playing in open spaces, back yards and in the home as we did many years ago.

With common sense and good parental support, there is no real risk involved for the children.

We must break out of the situation where everything is provided for us and we provide for ourselves.

I can remember Lego years ago was just square blocks and you made your own models, now you buy them already made up. This needs to stop."
