In this module we look at the origins of and the theory behind the SAQ(R) Athlete Development Programme - the First 20 Years. These 20 years of development prepares and sets the foundation for future sporting participation, success and achievement. While based loosely on the Balyi LTAD, this module clearly looks at the rationale of the plan, the pillars upon which the plan is built and the Spotlights of Opportunity for Rapid Development (SORD).
This module examines the theory behind the Spotlighs of Opportunity for Rapid Development as the young athlete grows and matures. It presents the type of training coaches and teachers should implement and how the young athletes should be challenged to open the way for the development of hos or her future full potential.
This module leads us to understand the athlete's body - how it is constructed and how it works and moves. It looks at physique and more importantly at the effects of posture on the sporting ability of athletes both as teenagers and later as adult sports participants.It examines the interesting topic of Upper and Lower Crossed Syndrome and how addressing this issue can add to the athlete's potential.
Module 4 is devoted how best to coach or teach the pre-school athlete. It explains the importnat part played by physical activity in both physical and mental development of the child. While it explains the development process from birth to 2, it also lays out a series of exercises which can be used with under 3s to under 5s to ensure that their development is positive.
This module covers the childhood years of the athlete from 6 to 11 years. It examines the development of the athlete and what we can do as coaches, teachers or parents to assist physical, mental and emotional development. We examine various training systems for skill, flexibility and speed development and how to ensure that physical development is positive and challenging.
Module 6 covers all what the coach needs to know about the teenage athlete. the early phase of this stage deals with puberty and effect it should have on coaching and how we need to be positive in introducing strength and stamina training while still maintaining speed and skill development. The latter phases leads coaches to preparing their charges in proper training methods and habits for adult participation.
In the final module we look at how best to monitor the progression of the young athlete through the whole child and teenage stages of development. We look at functional competence development as well as establishing an excellent testing and monitoring process.

This module is optional and is open to all students who wish to achieve the award for the overall SAQ® Diploma in Athlete Development, as soon as they successfully complete the previous 7 modules.
