We start by looking at the team “strength and conditioning” a relatively new term for the “fitness trainer”. The responsibilities of the strength and conditioning coach used to be a narrow job prospectus’ They included such things as designing weight lifting and resistance training programmes, making sure all players are supervised in the weight room, assist with rehabilitation of players returning from injury and ensuring that the players used proper lifting techniques and used preventative and corrective exercises as part of gym work.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
The modern strength and conditioning coach has now taken control and delivery of all aspects of fitness while still maintaining the strength training role. In recent years the importance of strength and power as the basis of speed and endurance development in field and court team sports has accelerated this transition. The module then examines two key issues of importance in team sport – the needs of the player and the physical fitness demands of the specific game. Where once stamina was seen as the base upon which fitness was developed, the pendulum has swung to the area of strength and power as being the training base. The 12 Km that the premiership soccer players cover in a game is now seen broken down and 6Km of this is walking and shifting around a small area, another 4Km is seen as being covered at jogging pace and that actual key moments in the game are covered in the final 2km – striding, acceleration, deceleration, stopping fast, twisting and turning quickly. In fact, most of the key situations in a game, occur in under 1000m of the movement pattern of a game. Research has also confirmed that players can sprint between 40 and 80 times in a game covering an average distances of 13.4m (Newenham, 2002). So training the right type of stamina and speed training becomes a major issue in preparing teams.

SPEED, STAMINA AND STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT
In this course we examine the definition, theory, elements and principles of stamina, speed and strength development in great detail. These area important issues s for the team manager whether he or she is the coach or not. The manager should know that the fitness being delivered to the team is correct and specific to the needs of the sport being played.

As much as possible the elements of speed, stamina and strength are covered in as practical a way as possible so that the manager knows what is best for the team. Upon completion of the module, he or she should be comfortable at designing and delivering an appropriate fitness or strength and conditioning programme.

This certificate covers all aspects of fitness development and the important are of conditioning for sport.
