 INTRODUCTION

This certificate course content covers fitness testing for sport in general and how to apply it to your chosen sport – men or women’s Sport. The module aims to upgrade your knowledge on the theory and practice of fitness testing in general and specifically as it applies to strength and conditioning coaches who wish to monitor the athletes, players or teams under their care.

This certificate starts by examining how fitness testing started in the laboratory of our universities and how it took a long time before field or on-site testing was developed.

The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the concepts of fitness testing and how to fitness test. It is paramount that the coaches develop the skills and experience which will allow them to carry out fitness tests. For this reason the module looks at the pre-requisites that need to be put in place to carry out fitness tests both from preparing the athlete/player and preparing oneself, the tester. We also look at the reason why we carry out a testing programme and we take into account the inherent dangers that can be associated with fitness testing in particular.

Two very important aspects of this module is looking at how we can standardise tests so the they become reliable, repeatability and therefore present valid and comparable results. The other aspect is deciding on the actual tests to conduct. These should be suitable to the sport, the facilities available to the coach and to the ability of the tester to administer. Some students may want to eventually decide to concentrate on becoming professional fitness testers and offering such skills to teams from various sports and so we need to take this into account in delivering this module.

For this reason we present a wide range of tests during the module and for each test we try to present a standardised system of delivery. We look at the following:

  • Aim/purpose of the test
  • Test warm-up
  • Test function
  • Player instructions
  • Test interval
  • Tests results and how to evaluate them

We then present a series of tests for various areas of capacity testing of the main physical components of fitness – strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

It is important that the module exposes the course participants to a variety of fitness tests to enhance their practical awareness. The coach needs to understand on what element of a component of fitness the actual test present us with information.  In addition they will also develop the skills and knowledge which will allow them to analyse test results. While the ability to administer tests proficiently is important, another important element, when the tests have been completed, is the ability of the coach to study and interpret the results.

Deciding on the tests should be made by evaluating the appropriateness of the tests to the sport, facilities available to the tester and the ability of the test to be repeated validly

Those who administer tests will be expected to give feedback to the individuals in particular and to the team in general based on results, which will concentrate on strengths and areas for improvement. The importance of confidentially and cross-comparison between players needs careful consideration.
